The effect of process parameters on the Layer thickness in the laser sintering of steel powder

This paper deals with the influence of input parameters such as laser power, scanning speed, powder material properties, etc. on the output parameters such as penetration depth, strength and balling phenomenon. Usually one of the main goals of researchers in the metal powders laser sintering is the process parameters optimization in order to get properties of the produced piece similar to the raw material. Due to this aim, different experiments are carried. Different parameters such as density, strength, surface finish, appearance, residual stress, etc. are considered and studied for different cases. In order to produce multi-layer fully dense pieces by the pulsed laser process, it is necessary to optimize the parameters and analyze the performance of the laser, material properties for the single layer first. The experiments are carried out on the free powder bed with 5mm depth. Each piece is produced as a single layer and by just one laser scanning over the powder bed. Movement of the laser beam on the surface produces a washer which its diameter is 20mm.
